So I’m a self-confessed Korean Movie and Drama addict, so much that I just keep on downloading Korean stuff and end up just scanning, getting bored and storing them on my external drive. For a breath of fresh air, I tried Au Revoir Taipei, a Taiwanese movie I accidentally saw while surfing the net. I read the comments and they were mostly positive so I gave it a go.
The story was simple. No complexities, no drama, no heavy lines. But I enjoyed each character, the subtlety of the plot, and the warm ambience. I’m no Taiwanese local, but I could imagine that the people over there could relate with the characters; they’re not the usual poor girl falls in love with rich guy, or girl dies in the end of cancer (stuff you could see in most K-movies haha). It’s just the story of a guy who desperately needed money to go follow her girlfriend who left for Paris, and a package he only needed to deliver for someone to get his plane ticket. He met a girl who worked at a bookstore while he was studying French language, and minutes later, they were running together, without knowing why. [I'll stop now I'm really sucking at this haha]
Any movie that can make me smile foolishly in the end is definitely a superb movie in my list. So there.
